Rebecca Lanette Taylor walked into her local Walmart in Crockett, Texas, with a very specific shopping list. Although she was able to buy anything she could want at the superstore, she wanted something that Walmart doesn’t sell on its shelves. The 49-year-old Texas woman approached a mother with her child at Walmart and offered to pay the woman cash for her baby.

The mother was at the self-checkout counter when Taylor came over and began trying to buy her baby. The mother had her infant along with a one-year-old toddler when Taylor tried to make the purchase. Taylor explained that she adored the baby’s blonde hair and blue eyes and asked the mother how much she would charge for the infant. The mother laughed it off as a joke, but then Taylor doubled down and made it very clear that she was willing to part with a lot of cash to obtain the human baby and had $250,000 in her car available for the transaction.

Taylor continued to push to make the purchase, so the mother ordered Taylor to back away from her child. However, Taylor had been wanting to purchase a baby for a long time and was not going to give up so easily, according to an affidavit. Fortunately, the mother was able to get Taylor to leave the store.

When the mother and her children exited the Walmart, Taylor was waiting for her. She yelled at the mother from across the parking lot and offered to pay $500,000 for the blonde-hair and blue-eyed baby. Taylor said she was willing to pay half a million dollars for the child “because she wanted him and she was going to take him.”

This was too far for the mother. She called the police and reported how Taylor wanted to buy her baby for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Taylor was arrested by Texas authorities on January 18, 2022, and was charged with the sale or purchase of a child, which is considered a third-degree felony in the state of Texas.

If Taylor gets convicted on the charge, she could face as much as ten years behind bars in a Texas corrections facility. She would also be expected to pay a fine of up to $10,000.

After her arrested, Taylor posted a $50,000 bond and was released from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.

She told the Houston County Sheriff’s Office that she was an attorney and “she wanted a child, so she offered to buy one.” Taylor said her goal was to get the mother to sell her child for $500,000.

The police believe this is not the first time Taylor tried buying a baby from its parents. The authorities are investigating two other reports of attempted baby purchases by Taylor, but no charges have been filed yet.

This is a bizarre and scary story that could have had a very different ending if the mother had agreed to sell her child to Rebecca Lanette Taylor. It’s fortunate that the mother was able to get away from Taylor and report the attempted purchase to law enforcement.
