Southwest Airlines has made it very clear throughout the COVID-19 pandemic that passengers are expected to wear masks while onboard a flight. Because masks have been proven to help slow the spread of the deadly virus, Southwest employees enforce a mask mandate of all passengers, including small children. However, one passenger recorded a video of a female passenger arguing with a Southwest flight attendant about the face mask policy, and other passengers can be heard jeering at the woman and her partner for failing to comply with Southwest’s new air travel requirements.
When the flight crew eventually led the woman and her partner off the plane, other Southwest passengers cheered. They were glad to know that Southwest was looking out for their safety by not allowing the woman on board because she was not wearing a mask.
A TikTok video of the incident was posted to the Chinese social media platform by user Brendan Edler. In his poignant video, other Southwest passengers are heard cheering as the flight crew escorted the difficult woman and her partner off the flight. The reaction was immediate because the other people on board the Southwest flight wanted to make sure they were safe from the deadly virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the video, the woman, whose identity remains unknown, can be heard arguing with the flight crew. She claims that she “did comply” with the Southwest mask mandate and went on to argue that the flight attendant by saying: “You’re saying I didn’t comply and put my mask on when you ask asked me to?”
Since the woman was caught with her mask off, she decided to go into attack mode. In the footage, the woman can be heard calling the flight attendant a liar and going so far as to make a statement about her character.
“You’re a liar, and you have to live with that,” she is heard saying.
Because many people on the flight could hear the argument, they stand up and start heckling the woman for disobeying the Southwest mask mandate. These people shout at the woman and her disgruntled partner and start saying their goodbyes.
“Bye,” shouts one person.
“Get off the plane,” yells another.
“That’s what happens when you don’t say you’re sorry,” someone else can be heard saying.
The woman then stands up and faces the other passengers, whom she flashes with her middle finger. The woman then leaves the plane with her docile partner in tow.
When the woman and her partner finally leave the flight, other passengers are visibly elated. One person even bursts into dance because the difficult woman has been removed from the flight.
Southwest did not offer further comment about the specific incident but did share some important information about their face mask policy.
“Federal law requires Southwest to ensure every person age two and over to wear a mask at all times throughout a flight, including during boarding and deplaning,” a Southwest Airlines spokesperson said. “We communicate the face-covering mandate to all Customers at multiple touchpoints throughout the travel journey.”
